09.21.09 | Wisconsin Wonders: Milton House Museum

WisconsinEye visited Milton House Museum in Milton, Wisconsin on September 21, 2009. Executive Director Cori Olson led a tour of the house.

The Milton House Museum is a unique historic site because it is the first grout building in the United States, it is a hexagonal traveler's inn from the 1840's and it was a stop on the Underground Railroad where slaves were hid in the underground tunnels.
Pioneer, Joseph Goodrich, came to Prairie du Lac, as Milton was called then, in 1838, looking for a better place for his family to live. He chose prairie land at the intersection of two Indian trails and built a small frame home.
Joseph Goodrich soon built an inn to accommodate the many travelers through the busy prairie crossroads. All were welcome under Joseph's roof, but not all of his guests traveled by stagecoach or train. Some were spirited into his care by the Underground Railroad.
