The number of sand mines in Wisconsin has exploded, going from a handful five years ago to dozens that employ thousands of workers and recently formed its own trade group, the Wisconsin Industrial Sand Association. Discussing why the industry has grown, and the regulatory and transportation issues posed by that growth, were Rich Budinger, president of new statewide trade group; Jim Tinjum, UW-Madison professor of geological engineering; Tom Beekman, northwest planning chief for the Wisconsin Department of Transporation, and Gail Good, air quality analyst with state Department of Natural Resources. Budinger outlined the trade association's agenda for the 2013-14 legislative session.
