The tremendous growth in the number of roundabout intersections in Wisconsin -- four on state highways in 2004, 200 now and as many as 100 more within a few years -- is a fascinating transportation development. In a Newsmakers interview on Sept. 12, two Wisconsin Department of Transportation engineers talked about the reasons for that growth, why the federal government is leading the push for roundabouts, how long it takes drivers to get used to them, what they cost and why a Wisconsin study showed that there were fewer crashes, and less severe injuries, at those intersections. Engineers Jerry Zogg and Patrick Fleming also talked a recent report that rated three City of Madison roundabouts as the most dangerous intersections in a one-year period.
