In their third Civil Dialogue on June 28, Republican Rep. Robin Vos and Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan -- the current and past co-chairs of the Joint Finance Committee -- disagreed on the Republican-passed budget that was just signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker. Vos said it fixed a $3.6-billion two-year budget deficit without raising taxes, but Pocan said it attacks middle-class residents by cutting aid to public schools, local governments and UW System. The two defended UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin for fighting for a new "authority" status for that flagship campus, even though the Legislature killed her proposal. Vos criticized the UW System for its "scorched earth" attacks on Martin, and Pocan said he was not surprised that Martin resigned after losing such a major fight. The two also talked about an investigation into a reported June 13 physical altercation between two Supreme Court justices and the end of Capitol security measures.
