The Pfister Hotel dates back to 1893, the fulfillment of a civic vision for a gateway to the community. Today it is under the nurturing direction of its gatekeeper, Peter Mortensen. Some people drive to the office in the morning. Howard Aprill heads for the trails. His workspace is a special stretch of natural terrain tucked in the heart of Milwaukee County’s Whitnall Park. It’s where wildlife roams, flourishes, and teaches visitors of the human kind the importance of stewardship in contemporary life. As a park naturalist it’s Aprill’s mission to serve as a bridge between both worlds. Veteran Milwaukee journalist Robert Tanzilo loves old schoolhouses, so much so that he’s written a book about them. Historic Milwaukee Public Schoolhouses details the development of MPS, brick by brick. Tanzilo’s book offers a romantic perspective of how the grand old buildings have fit in Milwaukee’s skyline, and served as cultural anchors for the neighborhoods. Mark Siegrist and WisconsinEye videographer John Schroeder visited with the author at one of his favorite MPS properties, Maryland Avenue Montessori School on Milwaukee’s eastside. A fully-restored, World War II-era B-17G bomber, named the Sentimental Journey, arrived July 13, 2012 at Wisconsin Aviation in Madison to offer the public a glimpse inside the historic plane. Sister Joel has served on White House commissions, and received numerous honors from major academic institutions. Yet the Milwaukee nun maintains a simple appreciation for the gift of learning, especially when that knowledge can be applied to everyday life.
