The last-minute addition of for-profit bail bonding, which was abolished in Wisconsin in the 1970s, to the proposed state budget was condemned in a Newsmakers panel on June 17. Calling the change unneeded and a potential invitation to corruption were Dane County Circuit Judge Nicholas McNamara, UW-Madison Law School Professor Ben Kempinen, Walworth County Clerk of Court Sheila Reiff, the Rev. Jerry Hancock and Michael Witt, president of the Wis. Association of Criminal Defense Lawywers. They asked that Gov. Scott Walker do what he did in 2011 – veto the provision to authorize bail bonding in Milwaukee, Dane, Kenosha, Racine and Waukesha couinties.
